Subject: RE: P. Grant- Public Lecture

Hi Paul:

Time to finalize the program for the public lecture. We need your able assistance to finish and ready the flyer for the schools. So far, the program is as follows:

4BB. Lunch- Public Lecture Brown Bag (12:15-1:45)

Chairs: P. Grant (EPRI)

What's "Super" About Superconductivity? A Millennium Progress Report

Hosts and Hostesses: Aldine/TCSUH Superconductivity Center Students, Aldine High School

[audience: General Public; area universities, high schools, press]

15 min. Pick up Brown Bag lunches

(5 min) Introduction of Panel Members        P. Grant

(10 min) The Science of HTS            J. R. Schrieffer

(10 min) HTS Materials                C. W. Chu

(5 min) Power Applications of HTS    P. Grant

(5 min) Electronic Applications of HTS       H. Weinstock

(5 min) Communications/Space Applications of HTS     D. Gubser (being invited)

(5 min) Transportation Applications of HTS -Japan MAGLEV/other applications Y. Shiohara

(30 min) Question/Answer with Audience

We still aren't thrilled with the name of the session... any progress? Or do you think it is okay as is?

Shiohara is going to collect appropriate visuals from the Japanese folks on MAGLEV etc. Likharev can't come, and has recommended Averin give his talk in single electron device. Rowell is giving a talk on Petaflop computer but I don't believe he can stay in Houston that long. He is coming in Sunday,is presenting at the Geballe Reception on Monday night, and speaks Wednesday morning. Harold will cover medical in his electronics overview.

We'll have some student session assistants to help pass the mics around the audience during the Q& A--

Let me know what you think, and we'll get rolling next week with the invites to the community.

Thanks!

Sue Butler

P.S. Are you able to accept the session chair invitation for the applications overview session on Wednesday morning?

Session is as follows..........

Chairs: [P. Grant?]; C. Platt

(20) J. Daley -overview of DOE Sc program

(20) Y. Shiohara- overview of Japanese coated conductor program

(15) D. Gubser [567] -overview of Naval motor/applications

(15) S. Wolf -overview of DARPA Sc program (for F. Patten)

(20) H. Freyhardt

(20) J. Rowell (petaflop computer project)

(15) S. Hornfeldt (ABB..)

>Sue, I've asked my two high schoolers to think about a "topical title" that

>would be catchy, perhaps musical, especially to the young folks. My

>daughter immediately replied, "Hip-hop's nothing to do with science, Dad."

>She got that right.

>

>Actually, heavy metal is surprisingly generation-spanning. A lot of kids,

>especially boys, listen to it. So maybe something like, "Superconductivity:

>Perfect Metallica." Let me think about it.

>

>If Gubser doesn't want this gig, I'll do it alone. Re Japanese, materials,

>etc., Kitazawa'a OK, but Murakami from SRL materials division speaks

>absolutely excellent English and can tell jokes as well. He has a library

>of photos of famous people levitating at SRL.

>

>I mentioned Kostya Likharev from Stony Brook would be good for a general

>audience talk on the impact superconductivity (LTS) could have on computers.

>A lively speaker. Kostya's Russian...very. That's European, sort of.

>

>Let's keep in touch on this.

>Hi, Paul.

>We now have Thursday, Feb. 24, from 12:30-2:00 blocked for the brown bag

>lecture for high school students, business folks, etc. The following

>agenda has been proposed, and we'd like your feedback. As discussed

>earlier, you would serve as moderator with Don Gubser (he hasn't agreed

>yet!). Although the time schedule would be tight, it is hoped that the

>the general public.. vignettes with visuals!

>

>12:45 -----

>

>5 min- Introduction of Panel Members

>

>10 min ---The Science of HTS (Paul has asked Bob Schrieffer if he would do

>this)

>

>10 min--HTS Materials (Kitazawa is working on this, but can't do it

>himself. He is recommending someone from the Japanese delegation)

>

>5 min -- HTS Power Applications -- P. Grant

>

>5 min -- HTS Medical Applications -- H. Weinstock

>

>5 min --HTS Applications for Communications & Space -- being determined

>       (could be one of the satellite folks, or filter/base station, etc)

>

>5 min -- HTS Applications in Transportation --Japanese magnev, etc.

>

>30 min -- Question/Answer with Audience

>

>Would be nice to have someone from Europe...

>

>Now for a catchy title that would draw them in...... you are known as the

>creative one.

>How about: Millennium Update: Where are we in Superconductivity?....

>pretty boring. Would appreciate your brainpower, as mine is pretty fried at

>this point.

>

>The concurrent sessions end at 12:30 p.m., so we would ask the schools to

>arrive at 12:15 and pick up their lunches in a separate area. They will be

>seated as soon as they arrive and pick up their lunches. Conference

>participants could either reserve their brown bag lunches in advance

>(available at registration from Sunday on..) or choose several fast food

>options at the George R. Brown...and wander in.

>

>Would appreciate your feedback at the earliest convenience.

>>Go for it, Sue. BTW, Rowell, even though he's not with Conductus, gives a

>>very good overview. Also, you might think about Kostya Likharev from Stony

>>Brook on RSFQ devices for petaflop computing...more focused than Rowell,

>but

>>also more exciting IMHO.
